FCT director of sports, Alim Musa, on Monday said that lack of funds was responsible for the disbandment of the city’s female football club, FCT Queens.
The team was disbanded in December 2013, following the approval of FCT minister of state, Mrs. Jumoke Akinjide.
Now, Musa has disclosed how huge finance involved in funding football led to its demise.
“FCT Queens was disbanded because they do not understand why the government cannot give them what they want at any point in time,” he told NAN.
“But everything has to follow the due procedure and they do not understand what the government was doing for them. I have said that if FCT will have a team that will represent her either in professional league or amateur league, such a team must be attached to an organisation.
“That organisation must be money-generating and part of the money will be used to run that club. Football should not just be about spending public funds, but generating funds that will run it. FCT sports council cannot own a club.”
Musa also said that it was for the same reason that the FCT was not keen on having a club in the elite division for men – the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
“I don’t think that we are anxious about having a club in the NPFL. But if we have any in the NPFL, we will appreciate it,” he said.
“I am only saying that the institution or the club owner must be able to bear the entire financial burden.”
