The Akwa Ibom state command of the Nigerian police force on Monday disclosed that it discovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in a male hostel within the campus of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO).

Etim Dickson, the police public relations officer in the state, told reporters that the explosives, which were home-made, were defused by the police , consequently averting what could have resulted in explosions.

He expressed suspicion that the IEDs might have been produced by science students of the university, but said investigations into the matter would commence immediately.

He urged the students on campus and parents not to entertain any fear about possible breakdown of law and order in the university community.

“The incident has been properly taken care of, we urge students and employees of the institution to go about their normal businesses,” he said.

The IEDs were discovered by the campus security squad known as operatives of Peace on Campus Initiative (PCI), who defused the explosives on arrival at the students’ hostel and then conducted a search round the other hostel rooms.
