James Lalu, executive secretary of the National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) says the disability community in Nigeria has suffered enough neglect.

He also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to appoint Adenike Tejuosho, a philanthropist and businesswoman, as minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation.

On January 8, the president suspended Betta Edu as minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation after a memo surfaced wherein she asked Oluwatoyin Madein, accountant-general of the federation, to transfer the sum of N585 million to a private account.

Edu had also approved the payment of flight fare for staff to Kogi, even though the north-central state has no airport to its name.

Lalu described Tejuosho as a huge asset to the country and expressed confidence in her ability to deliver on the job.

Inclusive News Network reports Lalu as adding that Tejuosho is one of the few political leaders in the country who has shown considerable commitment in promoting the welfare of people with disabilities (PWDs).

“We want to use this opportunity to call on his excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to consider Dr. Adenike Tejuosho for the opportunity to manage this ministry,” he said.

“It is our hope and aspiration that when she comes here, what she has shown to the disability community out of office will be tripled. As we have always said, the disability community has suffered enough and enough is enough.

“During his campaign, President Tinubu made a commitment and he has started showing the commitment. But, he needs the hands of people with the commitment, compassion and the interest to lead the ministry in order to give us hope.

“We use this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Adenike Tejuosho in advance, because we hope that President Tinubu will listen to the yearning and aspiration of people with disabilities by providing opportunities for the right people that will promote quality of life for the disabled community and the less privileged.”
