Newspaper Headlines: APC screening panel may demand resignation letters from political appointees

The directive of President Muhammadu Buhari that all ministers seeking elective positions should resign dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening panel may ask for resignation letters from political appointees seeking elective positions. The newspaper says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is planning to suspend online continuous voter registration for three weeks.

The Nation reports that Buhari shocked his cabinet members seeking elective positions with the resignation directive during the federal executive council meeting. The newspaper says the appeal court has set aside the ruling of the lower court on section 84(12) of the Electoral Act of 2022.

The Guardian reports that three ministers have resigned from Buhari’s cabinet to pursue their political ambitions. The newspaper says one month after the death of Osinachi Nwachukwu, a gospel singer, the police have yet to unearth the circumstances surrounding her death.

The Nigerian Tribune says the national executive committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown open the party’s presidential ticket. The newspaper quoted a report from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) which says former President Goodluck Jonathan has finally made up his mind to re-contest for president on the platform of the APC.

Daily Sun reports that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is set to embark on a two-week warning strike. The newspaper says gunmen killed six soldiers in an attack in Taraba state.
