Newspaper Headlines: Buhari writes INEC, seeks advice on electoral bill

The concerns over the Omicron COVID-19 variant and the response of the federal government dominated the headlines of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation reports that the federal government said it is on the alert to contain the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. The newspaper says the All Progressives Congress (APC) said its chairmanship slot has not been zoned to the north-central region of the country.

Daily Independent says there is confusion in the APC over the emergence of a factional caretaker committee in the party. The newspaper reports that the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has opposed the demand for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Punch reports that medical experts have warned that Nigeria risks travel bans with Canada’s detection of Omicron variant of COVID-19 in two travellers from Nigeria. The newspaper says President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to seek advice on direct primary and other clauses in the electoral bill.

The Nigerian Tribune says Kaduna has begun a for-day work schedule for civil servants in the state. The newspaper reports that senior advocates of Nigeria (SANs) have faulted the comment of Festus Keyamo, minister of labour, that #EndSARS panels are illegal.

Daily Trust reports that federal workers are in a last-minute rush to get COVID-19 vaccine as the federal government will bar unvaccinated workers from December 1. The newspaper says the federal government has condemned the killing of policemen by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
