Newspaper Headlines: Don’t de-register ASUU, NLC warns FG

The outburst of Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, against Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

Saturday Punch says PDP has been extending an olive branch to Wike to settle the protracted crisis in the party. The newspaper says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the federal government not to de-register the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the lingering strike.

Daily Trust says the recent flood in the northern part of the country has washed off rice farms as farmers are counting their losses. The newspaper reports that residents of flooded areas in Benue state have fled their homes as a result of the flood.

THISDAY says Wike has taunted the PDP to suspend him over the ongoing crisis in the party. The newspaper says ASUU) has begged the appeal court to grant its request for a stay of execution of the judgement ordering the union to suspend the strike.

Saturday Independent says the unregulated growth of vigilante groups has worsened Nigeria’s security challenges. The newspaper reports that the court has ruled that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) imposition of fines without a court order is illegal.

Saturday Sun says the supreme court has struck out a suit seeking to compel the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone its ticket for the 2023 presidential election. The newspaper reports that three police officers have been kidnapped in Ogun state.
