Newspaper Headlines: FG, states, LGs share N786bn May revenue

Reports on growing opposition to the planned hike in electricity tariff dominate the front pages of Nigerian newspapers today.

The Punch reports that the Debt Management Office (DMO) has warned that the federal government’s projected revenue of N10 trillion for 2023 cannot support fresh borrowings. The newspaper says the federation account allocation committee disclosed that it will share N786.16 billion May 2023 revenue among the three tiers of government. 

Daily Trust reports that Vice-President Kashim Shettima said the federal government is committed to eradicating variant poliovirus by the end of 2023. The newspaper says the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) said airlifting of Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia will end on June 24.

Daily Independent reports that the Department of State Services (DSS) has raised an alarm over planned attacks on wor­ship and recreational centres before and during Sallah celebration. The newspaper says Hitler Nwala, a witness called by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has told the presidential election petition court that the Independent National Electoral Commis­sion (INEC) deleted election results in all the 110 BVAS machines he inspected.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has kicked against the plan to increase electricity tariff by 40 percent on July 1. The newspaper says the presidency has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has not approved salary increase for political office holders.

The Guardian reports that communities that suffered huge negative impacts of 2022 flood incidents have not gotten any respite ahead of another prediction of heavy rainfall.
