Newspaper Headlines: INEC budgets N3bn for post-election court cases

The crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation reports that Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is under pressure to quit his position following the lingering crisis in the party. The newspaper says the official forex reserves status data report obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) indicated that forex reserves declined by $163.67 million last week.

Daily Trust reports that operatives of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) extort travellers at airports. The newspaper says the All Progressives Congress (APC) has earned over N1.3 billion from the sale of nomination forms for Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states.

The Punch says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has budgeted over N3bn to defend the results of the 2023 general election. The newspaper reports that international airfares on Nigerian routes have skyrocketed after foreign airlines raised the exchange rate for ticket sales from N462 per dollar to N551 per dollar.

Daily Independent says the United Kingdom has condemned the ethnic profiling in Lagos in the build-up to the March 18 governorship election. The newspaper reports that the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate allegations of electoral offences against governors and their deputies.

The Guardian says the gradual easing of the naira scarcity could force the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to halt the planned strike on Wednesday. The newspaper reports that stakeholders have lamented that the new interest rate introduced by the CBN would impact property prices, cost of investment and the entire construction value chain.
