Reports on the presidential primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.
The Punch reports that the Catholic diocese of Ondo said 38 persons have been confirmed dead in Sunday terrorists’ attack on St Francis Catholic church, Owo. The newspaper says the Debt Management Office said Nigeria’s total public debt stock rose to N41.60trn in the first quarter of 2022.
The Guardian reports that the option of a consensus candidate failed at the APC presidential primary election as 14 hopefuls jostled for the party’s ticket. The newspaper says Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, has picked Bayo Lawal as his running mate in the 2023 governorship election.
Daily Trust says the federal government is yet to inaugurate the climate change council six months after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the climate change bill into law. Bola Tinubu, APC presidential hopeful, is coasting to victory at the party’s primary election after seven hopefuls stepped down for him, the newspaper says.
The Nigerian Tribune reports that Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, said the death toll in the Owo Catholic church attack is now 22 and 56 people are currently receiving treatment in the hospital, but the church authorities said 38 deaths have so far been recorded. The newspaper says a US drug trial has recorded 100 percent success for cancer treatment.
Daily Sun reports that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Nigeria records a N1.2 trillion trade surplus in the first quarter of 2022. The newspaper says Usman Baba, inspector-general of police, has set up electoral offences desks in police commands.
