Newspaper Headlines: Rural dwellers resort to trade by barter amid naira scarcity

Daily Trust reports that residents of rural communities have adopted the ancient trade by barter to survive amid the scarcity of naira notes. The newspaper says the NGF has described the naira redesign policy as “money confiscation”.

THISDAY reports that to stall the supreme court ruling on the suit filed by the three state governments against the phase-out of the old naira notes, some states have filed for a joinder in the matter. The newspaper says Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has asked security agencies to invite Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister, for questioning over his allegations about a coup plan by the candidate and top military generals.

The Punch reports that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has promised to probe the allegation that it collected N2 billion from Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for support. The newspaper says governors have warned that the CBN policy might cause another economic recession in the country.

The Nigerian Tribune says the Kogi state government has asked the inspector-general of police to arrest Abdulrasheed Bawa, the chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and commit him as mandated by a court. The newspaper says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has redistributed voters to less congested polling units.
