NGE deputy president dies in road crash

Umar Tudunwada, deputy president of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), is dead.

Tudunwada, who was managing director of Kano State Radio Corporation, died in an accident at Kura town in Kura local government area of Kano state, on Sunday.

He was on his way back to Kano from Abuja where he attended a meeting of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON).

A source told TheCable that the deceased was in the vehicle with one of his wives, a daughter, and his driver when the accident occurred 30 kilometres away from Kano metropolis.

Those who survived the accident are currently receiving treatment at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital while Tudunwada has been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

He served as the media aide of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano. Tudunwada was also a former assistant general manager at Freedom Radio Group.

In 2006, he joined the Voice of America (VOA), Hausa Service, where he translated daily news from English to Hausa.

He returned to Freedom Radio in 2009 and was appointed general manager operations and later editor-in-chief.

Umar cut his journalism teeth at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) where he started as news assistant in 1980. In 1983, he joined the Kano State Television Corporation better known as CTV 67 as reporter but rose to the position of an editor.

He was at one time a correspondent for Deutsche-Welle (Voice of Germany), Hausa Service.
