The town was captured on Friday by Boko Haram militants after a fierce battle with Nigerian troops and the local vigilante group.

But Olajide Laleye, the army spokesman, told TheCable that Chibok was recaptured at 6:30pm on Saturday.

“Troops recaptured Chibok 1830hrs last night,” he said.

“Mopping-up operations are ongoing. The town is now secure. Further details later.”

Pogu Bitrus, national chairman of the Chibok Development Association, also confirmed that the town had been recaptured by Nigerian troops.
“It is by the combined effort of the local vigilantes and Nigerian troops that Chibok was recaptured,” he said.
“People are now moving freely in the town. However, the casualty figure at Chibok as of yesterday was nine. No Boko Haram militant survived the onslaughts of Nigerian troops and the vigilantes.”
