‘Nine killed, 50 injured’ in Jigawa auto crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jigawa state command, says nine people were killed and 50 persons sustained injuries in an auto crash which occured in Ringim LGA of the state on Friday.

According to NAN, Ibrahim Gambo, public relations officer of the command, said the incident occured at about 6:15am in Ringim-Chaichai area on Kwanar Shafar road.

Gambo said the incident was reported to the corps at about 6:23am, adding that operatives were deployed to the area after which the victims were taken to the Ringim General Hospital for treatment.

He said 70 people were involved in the accident involving a DAF truck with registration number TAR 357 XA, which was driven by one Babangida Muhammad.

Shehu added that the cause of the accident was speed violation by the driver of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the police command in the state said 13 people were killed while 32 others sustained injuries in the incident.

Lawan Shiisu, the police public relations officer of the state, in a statement, said the vehicle was heading to Lagos from Maigatari LGA.

“On April 1, 2022, at about 0630hrs, information at our disposal revealed that a trailer truck with registration no TAR 357 XA, loaded with about 53 passengers, cows and goats from Maigatari LGA and heading to Lagos state and driven by one Babangida Mohammed, aged 28, of Azare LGA in Bauchi state, had an accident,” the statement reads.

“The unfortunate incident happened when the said driver lost control on reaching a point called Kwanar Shafar in Ringim Area, and as a result, the vehicle fell and overturned.”

Shiisu added that Aliyu Sale, commissioner of police in the state, has condoled with the families of the deceased passengers and sympathised with the injured.

The police commissioner also urged drivers to cultivte the habit of checking their tyres, brakes, and other essential parts of their vehicles, and ensure that they sleep adequately before embarking on journeys.
