NNPC to sign gas pipeline agreement with Morocco, Senegal
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited says it will sign agreements on the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project.
NNPC said the agreements would be between Nigeria and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco (ONHYM) as well as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commission on Thursday.
In a statement on Tuesday, NNPC said both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the project, which, when completed, will provide gas to the West African countries through to the Kingdom of Morocco and subsequently to Europe.
Mele Kyari, group chief executive officer (GCEO), NNPC, said this when he paid a courtesy visit to Omar Touray, president, ECOWAS Commission.
According to Kyari, the NNPC and Morocco’s ONHYM would also sign two agreements with Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company of Mauritania and Petrosen of Senegal.
“Once completed, the project will supply about 3bscfd of gas along the West African Coast from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Cote d’ Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania to Morocco,” the statement reads.
“Other benefits of the NMGP Project include improving people’s living standards, integrating the economies within the Sub-region & mitigating against desertification through sustainable & reliable gas supply.”
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) is expected to drive the execution of the 7,000-kilometre Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project to ramp up supply to Europe.
