Bukola Saraki, president of the senate, on Thursday said the upper legislative chamber would ensure that nothing distracts it in the discharge of its duties.

Addressing members of Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union in Abuja, Saraki said the red chamber would do its best to meet the yearnings of Nigerians.

“I solicit your prayers for peace and unity in Nigeria. Those who came before us made sacrifices for Nigeria to be better and stable and we would follow in that path,” he said.

“It is not about personal interest but the interest of Nigerians.”

Earlier, chairman of the union, Abdulhameed Adi, pledged support for the senate under Saraki’s leadership.

Adi encouraged the president of the senate to replicate his effort as governor of Kwara in the national assembly for the progress of the country.

“Now that you are here in the national assembly, our expectations and the expectations of Nigerians are high; we assure you of our support,” he said.

“We also support President Muhammadu Buhari’s change mission, particularly in the fight against corruption and impunity.”

He appealed to politicians in the country to be committed to the welfare of the citizenry rather than pursue personal interest.
