The Ogun state government on Tuesday, began demolishing shanties and makeshift structures in Kara, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The government said the shanties and other illegal structures disfigure the area and are used as hideouts by criminals.

The task force was led by Farouq Akintunde, the senior special assistant (SSA) to Dapo Abiodun, governor of the state.

Akintunde said the exercise was in line with positioning the state as the industrial hub of Nigeria.

“Ogun state has a role to play in the economic advancement of the nation. No serious investor will come here and partner with us with all these kinds of shanties and garbage,” he said.

Faeces and garbage littered the road median along the corridor and under the Kara bridge during the demolition job.

Though there was mild resistance as some protesters were seen carrying sticks and cudgels, the presence of police officers and personnel of the Ogun State Orientation and Safety Corps, prevented chaos and violence.
