The state working committee (SWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo has suspended Fatai Adams, its chairman, over alleged anti-party activities.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by nine members of the committee, the PDP executives accused Adams of engaging in activities “likely to bring the party into disrepute”.

“Pursuant to section 58 (1b, c, f, h and i) of the PDP Constitution as amended in 2017, the State Working Committee has approved the suspension of the State Chairman, Mr Fatai Adams, for anti-party activities and for engaging in activities likely to bring the party to disrepute,” the statement reads.

“The party wishes to state emphatically that it will deal decisively with any incursion by the ruling party, the APC, into its ranks.”

The executives asked Adams to appear before the party’s state disciplinary committee for further interrogations.

But Adams has denied the allegations, saying he was being witch-hunted by some “elements” in the party

Meanwhile, the PDP national working committee (NWC) has kicked against Adams’ suspension.

In a statement, Debo Ologunagba, PDP spokesperson, described Adams’ suspension as “illegal”, saying it didn’t follow due process.

“The NWC declares the said suspension as null and void and of no effect, not being consistent with provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017) and laid down Rules,” the statement reads.

Ologunagba said the SWC has no power to suspend a state chairman without “due recourse” to the NWC as provided by the party’s constitution.

“The PDP is an organized political Party governed by strict adherence to the provisions of its Constitution and Rules and will not allow any individual or group at any level to violate its Constitution and Rules,” Ologunagba said.

The NWC warned those involved in Adams’ suspension to “retrace their steps” or face “punitive actions”.
