Police: 14 kidnap victims rescued in Niger

The police command in the federal capital territory (FCT) says it has rescued 14 abducted persons at Gauraka area of Niger state.

Some residents of Gauraka community in Tafa LGA, Niger state, had on Monday, blocked the Abuja-Kaduna highway to protest the series of abductions in the community.

Gauraka community is located along Abuja-Kaduna highway.

Mariam Yusuf, FCT police spokesman, in a statement on Thursday, said the joint operation was carried out in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) and local hunters at Byhazin-Bwari axis of Abuja.

According to NAN, Yusuf said the security operatives combed the forest, engaged in a gun duel with the suspected kidnappers, dislodged them, and arrested two kidnap suspects.

She said other suspects escaped with bullet wounds, adding that exhibits recovered from the kidnappers’ den were two AK-47 magazines and cooking utensils.

Yusuf said the victims who appeared frail after several days in captivity were currently receiving medical attention at the police medical facility.

According to Yusuf, Bala Ciroma, FCT police commissioner, has assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property within the FCT.
