A 75-year-old man, identified as Sunday, has been arrested for allegedly impregnating a 13-year-old girl in Anambra state.

Sunday, identified as a guardian to the victim, was apprehended on Sunday night by officials of the ministry of women affairs in the state.

The suspect, who lives in Awka, the Anambra capital, was said to have defiled the minor when his wife travelled.

He has, however, reportedly denied fathering the child.

The suspect is also alleged to have raped a seven-year-old girl who was living with him.

Commenting on the incident, Ify Obinabo, commissioner for women and children’s affairs in the state, said the ministry will ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice.

“Whenever a particular person is hurt, all of us are involved and in this together. I am assuring you that justice must be served,” he said.

“If the man is claiming that he is not the person that impregnated her, fine. Then the person that impregnated her must come out, because this baby didn’t come from the blues.

“We must catch this person that is responsible.”

Confirming the incident on Monday, Ikenga Tochukwu, police spokesperson in the state, said the suspect has been arrested, while the victim and the baby have been handed over to the Anambra government.

“The suspect has been arrested and the 13-year-old girl and her baby have also been rescued. The girl and her baby are in the safe custody of the ministry of women and social welfare of the state,” he told TheCable.

He added that further development on the incident will be communicated soon.
