Police arrest three suspects for ‘killing’ naval officer in Ondo

The Ondo police command says it has arrested three suspects for allegedly killing Akingbagbohun Ayomide, a naval officer, at Idoani, in the Ose LGA of the state.

Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the command’s spokesperson, on Thursday, said the suspects alongside others who are at large allegedly attacked the deceased with an iron rod and plank, following an altercation with one of them.

Odunlami-Omisanya identified the suspects as Sambo Ayomide, Johnson Adeleke and Shagari Samson, giving their ages as  17, 20, and 20 years, respectively.

“On Monday 26th of June, one Mr Olaoluwa came to Idoani police division and reported that his friend, while on their way had an altercation with one Johnson Adeleke but someone came around to settle the scuffle. Unfortunately, this young boy went and mobilize others and attacked them,” the police spokesperson said.

“Later, we realize that the victim attacked is a sub-lieutenant, Akingbagbohun Samuel Ayomide of the Nigerian navy. 

“Currently, three suspects are in custody and in the course of interrogation, we realized that one Ayomide Sambo was one of those mobilized to the scene and when he got there, he carried an iron rod, hit him on his head, his testicles and started stoning him. 

“Later, he became unconscious and he was rushed to the hospital in the town, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor.

“The suspects will soon be charged in court after completion of the investigation. The police and navy have been working together since the incident happen to maintain peace in the community.”

Sambo Ayomide, one of the suspects, confirmed that there was a disagreement between the deceased and his friend, Shagari Samson.

“We accompanied my friend, Shagari Samsosn to get his power bank, so there is a particular portion of the road that is bad, so unintentionally, Adeleke Johnson used his hand to hit the Naval officer who was putting on his cap, the deceased then slapped him repeatedly and hit him with his head, asking him if he was blind,” he explained.
