Police arrest three suspects over murder of Uber driver in Lagos

The police command in Lagos says its operatives have arrested three men for allegedly killing one Morenikeji Oluwaniyi, a 27-year-old Uber driver.

According to the police, the suspects also allegedly stole a Toyota Corolla saloon car belonging to the victim.

The police, in a statement on Wednesday, identified the suspects as 27-year-old Rilwan Nasiru, 23-year-old Sodiq Taiwo, and 20-year-old Oladimeji.

The suspects were said to have booked an Uber ride, and lured the driver to Meiran area of Lagos and allegedly strangled him.

They allegedly dumped the body of the deceased along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

The death of the deceased was reported to the police by his fiancée on September 6, 2021.

“Detectives attached to the Meiran Police Division, Lagos State, have arrested three male suspects who conspired and gruesomely murdered an Uber driver, Morenikeji Stephen Oluwaniyi, aged 27, and made away with his Toyota Corolla saloon car,” Adekunle Ajisebutu, Lagos police spokesperson, said in the statement.

“The suspects, Rilwan Nasiru, aged 27; Sodiq Taiwo, aged 23, and Oladimeji, aged 20, booked Uber service online, lured the driver to Meiran area and strangled him to death.

“The suspects, after the dastardly act, dumped his body on the Abule Egba bridge, along the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway and made away with his Toyota Corolla Saloon car with Reg. No. KSF 830 GX.

“Following a report by the victim’s fiancée at the Police Division on 6th September, 2021, detectives immediately put in motion investigation mechanisms which led to the arrest of the suspects in their criminal hideouts, and recovery of the stolen car.

“The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, pleased with the breakthrough but saddened by the incident, has directed that the case should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.”

The police commissioner also asked those operating e-hailing businesses to be security conscious.
