The Nigeria Police Force has refused to speak on the arrest of Daniel Elombah, publisher of elombah.com.

Operatives of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) had invaded the Anambra residence of the publisher on Monday and whisked him away alongside his brothers.

There are reports that they were arrested over an opinion published on elombah.com.

TheCable was not able to independently verify this claim.

Although the publisher was later released and told not to leave Abuja, where he was transferred to from Anambra, his brother is still in custody.

When contacted, the Anambra state police command denied knowledge of such arrest.

Nkiruka Nwode, the command spokesperson, said she had not heard of it but promised to investigate the issue.

“Are you sure of what you are saying (regarding such arrest)? Is it not better you investigate before you talk?” she queried over the phone, before adding: “I will check and get back to you.”

Jimoh Moshood, spokesman of the force, refused to comment, saying he was at a conference.

There has been a social media campaign for the release of the journalists.
