POLL: Should Buhari ban the hijab?

POLL: Should Buhari ban the hijab?
December 31
09:46 2015

Following a series of suicide bombings by hijab-wearing Boko Haram militants, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday that he would consider banning the Muslim apparel. His concerns, it would appear, are more about security than the religious implications.

Hijab, worn by Muslim women to conceal some attractive parts of their anatomy, has been a symbol of tussle between Muslims and non-Muslims in secular schools in the south-west, and Buhari’s statement appears to have touched a raw nerve yet again in a country where religious matters elicit the most sentiments.

Chad, a Muslim-majority country, banned hijab when suicide bombers started launching attacks wearing it, but there was no opposition from the Muslim leaders who were also more worried about security than religious obligations. But Chad does not have a history of religious acrimony, unlike Nigeria.

Nigerians should not single out a religious group for stereotyping. We didn’t ban the tricycle, army uniform, police uniform because they are also used by the terrorist. Neither did we close down schools because terrorists said western education is prohibited nor did we close down Federal Government schools because the Chibok were kidnapped from there! Hijab is the Muslim women’s right just as education is the right of every citizen of this country. You do not cut off your head because it is aching you, you seek for solution. Gather intelligence, use bomb detectors, install CCTV, flush the terrorists out of their hideout. May God be the strength of our Soldiers and guide PMB administration

Banning of hijab in this country will rather than solve Boko Haram terrorism aggavate it.Hijab is a symbol of Islam it is a negation of right to worship it contradicts the command of Allah as enshrined in Al-Islam.Banning it is indirectly banning Islam in Nigeria and the attempt no diubt will be stoically and vehemently resisted by the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and beyond.
If Boko Haram attacks have been an embarrassment to most Nigerian Muslims proscribing the use of Hijab is like giving tonic to the Boko Haram evil. The whole idea is to destabilise this government the more because religious tension may erupt. The issue is very volatile and the government should seek God’s wisdom to do what is right.

I think d banning of Hijab due to the insecurity in the country will not really affect the situation as people are thinking it could. Any muslim is judge according to their intentions be it you wear Hijab or not. So securing our nation to live peacefully without no fear will be the price (if the need be)we will have to pay and accept the banning of Hijab upto when this bad people are flushed out of our nation.

Your comment..Banning hijab does not solve any thing but can even had more, hijab is Muslim women pride and even the commandment from Allah. So why should the government deny Muslims from their Right? Again do the government know the aims of boko haram, if the banning of hijab will makes them to achieve part of it, so therefore government should look for other strategy, because we Muslim can not be working in naked.

The. Hijab is the right to our Muslims women and if terorist group impersonated it during their attacks that should not amount of banning it in our dear country because, when such a kind of thing happend to our militry and police uniforms no body even start saying such thing, until now on Hijab! But, the idea is somany people doesnt like seeing our dear respectful women on Hijabs hence, that should be an issue to us, but banning Hijab is not the solution to our current insecurity problems if we are to be realistic and sincere to our selves! Let them come out and tell us their real intentions about Islam not Hijab! But Allah will never allow them to succeed their negative intentions on us! May Allah see us throgh and bring elasting solution to this and give the wisdoms to PMB in fitching out the sponsors of this Boko Haram and the rest!

        Thank you!

Banning hijab would not solve the problem. Boko haram and the likes are very good at terrorising people and the strategies they use in doing that. So if the wearing of Hijab is banned, don’t you think they can start dressing like CHRISTIAN NUNS which is kind of similar to the ways Muslims dress to execute their ways of terrorising?

” ban restricted to only verbal statement ” this is one sentence dat centers on diplomacy which Muslims can explore.. when Prophet Muhammad denounced being the Prophet of Allah, it was a verbal statement, a statement that eventually lead to the spread of Islam. I will rather implore fed govt to be careful with choice of words to use. The word ‘Ban’ triggers headache. Hijab is Allah-given right, the world population ( both Jinn and mankind) cannot vote against it, so y the poll. Allah bless my country Nigeria, Allah Bless PMB… he needs our prayer more now…

Banning Hijab isn’t the solution in solving Boko Haram attacks, yet you will give them opportunity to be happy because they have succeeded in destroying Islam.. Banning Hijab is just like prohibiting the females from not wearing their clothing’s.. How will the President feel when he sees females naked.. Hijab is one of the dressing of every Muslim females and by you banning it will only attract the wrath of Allah because Hijab is Farid ‘ayn (obligatory) on every Muslimah.. I suggest the President should give it more thought on this before making a big mistake.. And also if he decides to ban Hijab he should also ban all other religious wears and he should tell us the clothes we should all wear.. For crying out loud He doesn’t have the right to stop or change the law made by Allah Almighty.. Just remember that when you ban the Hijab, the punishment for all those that stopped wearing it will be on your head.. And remember you are a Muslim and you will be questioned regarding this issue.. “What will you say?!” Is it better for the females to be naked or to find another way to stop this.. I pray Almighty Allah guide the President in making the right choice.. Aameen.. Islam is a religion of Peace!!

NO, banning of hijab is not the solution to the boko haram problem, there are various means at which people use in bombing aside the hijab which are cars, bags etc, y can’t you consider banning the use of cark:s first and bags. The hijab is the Muslims identity that was commanded to us by our divine being, Allah. So the federal government shouldn’t go near that at all if they don’t want to incure Allah’s wrath on themselves. Cutting of the head is not the solution to headache as banning of hijab is not the solution to evacuate boko whatever…..Let’s make use of our senses pls

firstly, media will always find an issue to distract nigerians, one of them is this Hijab ban. Also,Nigerian government seems to be hypocritical to solve this insurgency problem as they claimed to have wiped them off. Lastly, putting a ban on Hijab can never be the solution since there are affordable censors that can be developed even by Nigerian engineers through satellite communications.

If you photocopy that book you are bound to find no peace for you just lost your integrity, if you copy from the book and you don’t reference it, you are stealing intellectual property. The ban on hijab is just a way of fulfilling the “world order”. Nobody will follow the world order and know peace. Hijab is a sign of peace. We don’t ask people with diabetes not to eat simply to control their blood sugar. Knowing food is essential for life, we only look for other treatments. Similarly, we cannot ban the hijab simply because some miscreants use it for mischief , since it’s essential for muslims. Despite the higher rate of rape among women without hijab, no one has forced them to adopt it: despite the high rate of murder in the US, they are yet to prohibit private ownership of guns. Every people protect their values. The hijab must not be made to pay for boko haram’s sins.

So where exactly is the fg referring?/the whole of Nigeria or the affected region? Are you going to derobe us publicly or you ll ask us to reduce the length. These are questions that need reply. #use bomb detectors not ban hijab as our identity can be seen.the fg will give people authority to insult Muslim women. The government shouldn’t ban hijab. Muslim women shouldn’t be made scapegoats for terrorists perpetrators. The use of hijab is a decree from almighty Allah, the one who knows all things, the most wise. Allah is in charge of all affairs. When Allah decrees a matter no human has the right to go against it.

I say emphatic NO to ban on HIJAB, No to ban on Modesty. We don’t want to be taken back to the stone age where people go about naked.

If we cannot ban Agbada since it can also be used to hide bombs, we cannot ban military uniform also for the same reason and we cannot ban children from going about because they are the means this evil people are using, then we cannot singled out a ban on a religious injunction of a particular people. This is very sensitive issue that need not be toiled with.

I support intelligence mean that will include using highly powerful bomb detective gadgets that will detect explosives that a far range. I support one united country that will tolerate others religious view.

Truly there is no need to ban hijab wearing in Nigeria, doing so is helping those sponsoring the international terrorism to achieve one of their aims which is to demonize Islam and all its values including mode of dressing.
The statement of the president that he may ban the hijab wearing if yhe sucide bombings persist,is not even helping the situation as it will accentuate the incident of women suicide bombings subjecting the innocent and unfortunate women under the capitivity of the terrorists to being used as bombers by the devilish people.
The president should therefore not conteplating banning hijab wearing as it will not only be difficult to enforce but may open up another confrontation between the government the real muslims.

The decision to ban Hijab may mean that Boko Haram
has succeeded in their mission. Rather than ban Hijab,
the government can acquire bomb detective gadgets
which can detect bombs from afar. Instead of
considering how to stop the wearing of Hijab, the FG
should be thinking of how to stop Boko Haram. “If Hijab ban must be considered, then the
government has to also ban use of vehicles, hand
bags, cell phones, motocycle and suits because more
evils have been perpetuated through them. It’s totally

    Hijab may be ban (buhari)

Banning the use of hijab cannot solve the problems we are facing with boko haram but a violation to the right of innocent Muslims women and disbelief to the word of Almighty Allah.

And whoever wage war against the word of Almighty Allah will FACE the consequences.

    When Allah revealed (what means):
{“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and
guard their private parts and not display their adornment except that which [ordinarily] appears thereof and to draw their head covers over their chests and not to display their adornments [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband’s fathers, their sons, their husband’s sons, their brothers, their
brother’s sons, their sister’s sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private
aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in
repentance, all of you, O believers, that youmight succeed “} [Quran, 24: 30]

they tore a part of their garments and drew it down over their heads to cover themselves.” [Al-Bukhari]

    • {“And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage – there is no blame upon them for putting aside their
outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.”} [Quran, 24: 60].

    • {“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their
    outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”}
    [Quran, 33: 59]

    • {“And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves (adornments) like that of the times of Jaahiliyyah (i.e., the pre-
    Islamic era).”} [Quran, 33: 33].

My advice to Mr president is that he should give himself a second thought before focusing on hijab as a solution to boko haram.
Even the Christian leader before you have never take hijab as a solution to a national problems.
boko haram is a political issues,so,solve your problems politically.

It is what Islam stands for, modesty. Somebody should kindly tell him this is a ticket to more problems for the country. It is tantamount to fighting ringworm when you have a bigger disease like leprosy to deal with. The president should not turn muslims to the play thing of the society. We shouldn’t be bullied because of this. With or without the the hijab Boko Haram has always had a way. Therefore the bone of contention should be how to stop the insurgency totally rather than this. In as much as the army uniform stays, and the internet has not been shut down for  cybercrimes or as an aid for enhancing terrorism then the ban on hijab can never be a solution to Nigeria’s problem. #ISBANNINGHIJABTHEANSWER?
I concur with Mr. President that banning Hijab is not the solution. But I further ask, did banning #Motorcycle ever solve the problem? If it does not, as surely it didn’t. Then, the solution lies in banning #INJUSTICE and #CORRUPTION in all strata. In addition, more vigilant and intelligent security apparatus is another option and of course, well motivated security personnel. Let us not forget that, protection of #Hijab is as important to any Muslim woman as protection of her feminity. I personally do not see banning #Hijab as an option in tackling insurgency. But how do you see? Let us proffer more viable and veritable solutions to our problems.

Its not ideal to say Hijab use will be banned in Nigeria. this is against the teaching of Islam for a woman matured, is not permitted to go out without covering her body. Even in the Qur’an, it tell d Prophet of Islam dat he should tell his wives, children and wives of believers to cover there body when they are going out. so if the President should banned the use of Hijab, does that not violate the sayings of the Qur’an? Please let’s respect each others religion.

Banning Hijabs will never solve Boko Haram. But, if the government is considering banning Hijabs, other items usually used by suicide bombers have to such as motor bikes, cars including sun’s, army, police & paramilitary uniforms must be banned as well. Catholic nuns should also not be excluded. PMB should do away with ill advises capable of truncating his change efforts. He should think of how to protect both Muslims & Christians & Nigerians in general. Don’t attack Muslims many of whom were instrumental(including those wearing Hijabs) to your emergence as President. Intelligence gathering is key.

In my book, banning wearing of hijab will solve no any problem. Because bomb can be carried along even inside inner wears. Moreover, most of the ravaging boko haram attacks are perpetuated by men boko haram members. The thing that will only solve the problem is thorough searching of everyone entering any public or private gathering be it a Muslim or a Christian. innumerable number of Christian women were caught with bombs in different parts of the insurgency areas. So I do not succumb to wearing of hijab.

Well. I am sure this will be another Platform for Boko Haram, will use to create problem between Ahlulsunna, ahlul tijjania, and other ISLAMIC SECTS. To create confusion in the country. If one could remember the adoption of chibo girls is to create confusion between Christian and Muslims. Now that issue of HIJAB is on it will be fully harness by BOKO HARAM, so the policy makers should do it with caution. My suggestion is that HIJAB is various types and sizes the policy makers should think towards that, to avoid stepping on another toes. And we don’t know what Shi’a are planning, in their case the HIJAB could also be used by them. May Allah subhanahu wata Alla make our country NIGERIA to in peace. Amin

It hurts even more that some of you will be citing religious grounds to disprove what is intended to help in saving lives. Banning hijab won’t be permanent. It has to be for a short period in order to curtain this bad elements. Desperate situation, they say, calls for desperate measure. But if you choose to wear the hijab while they kill you over there, go ahead and even wrap the whole of your body. Religion has made many Nigerians thoughtless. Very sad!

Hijab Is One of the essential human rights a muslim woman should not be deprived, but if its stated to ban the use of hijab because the terrorist hide under the usage of hijab to carry out their operations, then, i should suggest that there should be ban on use of amunitions by Nigeria forces, due to the fact that boko haram sect is also using amunition to make violence in nigeria. I know this will not be done, because, amuntions is one of the essential right of nigeria forces which cannot be deprived.

My major worry is what prompted the question from the journalist that put it forward to PMB?

Why should any reasonable Nigerian ask such a sensitive question knowing that it will lead to reactions from Muslims who are serious about their religion?

Only a nominal Muslim will see the issue as nothing to care about.

I am a Muslim and I am proud to be because Islam means Peace and it preaches peaceful coexistence.

Hijaab is the divine instruction from Allah to all Muslim women. The fact that some women see it as optional doesn’t mean we can play on the intelligence of those who see it as it should.

It’s painful that the enemies of Allah are hiding under the umbrella of Islam to unleash that resides in them, which is now bringing attacks to the Hijaab. The promise of Allah on His enemies will naturally occur.

In case we don’t know, let’s find out from Wikileaks. BH is a CIA making just as ISIS and the likes just to reduce the population of Muslims. If not why are these stupid and satanic groups operating in Muslim dominated parts of the world?

    Let’s wake up.

Hijaab is an act of faith.

Government should work more on intelligence to improve security.

    Islam is a simple religion.

If Hijabs are ban, that means we are challenging Allah’s command where by He ordained it compulsory for every woman to cover herself. No, he shouldn’t put a ban on hijab. Although, this plot by the terrorists calls for much concern in the minds of all of us—Muslim or not— as to the security of our country. Looking at it from the point of view of all citizens(Muslims inclusive) considering what we can do to help the situation, I think that ‘giving up’ the hijab will be a sacrifice too great for the Muslims to make. It is a part of our life. We cannot imagine how we’d appear without it.
And particularly considering the prevalent situation in the world today In which Muslims are being attacked in many countries because of the accusation of terrorism. Islam prescribes a way of life for its adherents. Putting a ban on hijab means disallowing a major part of Islam… It’s outward appearance. And it may just give way to a widespread dissapproval of Islamic values in the country. This i think would have huge negative effects on the possibility of a peaceful, collaborative Nigeria which is just starting to grow again with the election of a president who appears to have the approval of a great majority of Nigerians, who seems to bear in his hands hope for a Nigeria of our dreams.

I wonder how Buhari will say this. He suppose not to mention such talkless of saying it out.(As a Muslim)

How level of his eeman or taqwa by depriving the Muslims of our right.

Firstly considered that Nigeria as a nation contain many religious group in which that the law of this nation testify that everyone have the right/freedon for their choosing religion.

Then our religion order us to cover our body, you are trying to tell us not to and do you think we will follow your order outside from Almighty Allah (SWT), No! We can’t!

We (Muslims) did not compulsory it on anyone as says in Quran’No compulsion in Islam’ but we can’t look down/up and you deprive us from what we are told by Allah (SWT), its not possible. You are oppressing us by that.

    Pls, question to be answer
Is Bokoharam are muslim or terrorist?
Are they wearing hijab for invading?
    Are they oppressing only non-muslims?
    Is only church/shrine was bumb?

So I believe we try harder to look for a better solution not banning the fundamentals of a religion (Islam). And we may also add Allah’s intervention by praying strongly.

Nigeria is multi religion country and every religion should have the right to practice their religious rite. Hijab in islam is fundamental symbol for Muslim women, the fact that some few hoodlum are using it to commit havoc in the land is not enough reason to ban it and some Muslim female are not wearing it is lack of knowledge, so banning it will cause more problem than solutions. Thus, If Mr president want to rule with@ putting God Almighty first there be failure. so i pray that the president always put Almighty first b4 embarking on any issue. ameen.

This will great more problem to the country because the hijab Identified the different between Muslim and non Muslims and if Buhari should ban hijab there will be war that will worse than that of Book haram because if Buhari should ban hijab that show the Book haram has defeated us and it will create problems because me as a Muslim I will not obey Buhari as a president of Nigeria, BAN NOT PRESIDENT BUHARI.

Your comment..banning hijab is not the best solution to the issue of boko haram in Nigeria bcos as we all know boko haram is using military uniform to disguise, why can’t he ban the soldier and security officer for wearing the uniform. Hijab is our pride and we won’t hesitate to cause harm if d FG didn’t take the proper steps. It is a command from Allah, who is Buhari to ban it.

The banning of hijab can not be seen as a way of correcting or stopping the operations of some sect. The treatment of headache is not by beheading he patient.
Nigeria was never a religious country so it shouldn’t be seen as one

First,I am shocked at this statement attributed to pmb. And i have been waiting for him to deny it. My shock is informed by the disappointment i feel from a man i trust his experience and wisdom. I understand that he is opened to negotiations with the terror group, boko haram. But that we should hide our faith because of the failure of the Nigerian military under his grand command, is to announce our defeat and to surrender to the enemy.

From my own perspective, banning of hijab as nothing to do with the current issue of “Boko-Haram. In fact, it will even complicate the situations of things because it would be seen as restriction to practice religion of choices when there’s freedom to practice any religion. Hijab is a ” Divine right of women in ISLAM”. Banning it would aggravate another religious disorder.

Banning the Hijab will not solve the BOKO HARAM problem, afterall the success achieved so far has been due largely to concerted and collective efforts of all including the hijab-wearing Muslims. How will you now turn to the same Muslims to place a ban on their symbol of worship? That will rather mean an attempt to start another protracted civil problem. Mr President, do not even think in that direction!

That is IMPOSSIBLE. Bannin of hijab doesn’t even hav to b an option to consider bcos it is ordained by God almighty, are u trying to go against God just 4 a reason dat wont even solve boko haram issue? Den y not ban d military uniform since boko haram olso wears dat! If every1 will b just u ol can tell dat even women of Abraham , Noah, Moses and even Jesus cover their body in such manner. Even Mary mother of jesus Chris cover ha body in such manner check ol ha images in churches and books 4 references. Bannin Hijab 4 muslum women is as good as telling dem to walk nicked. So pls dis should not even b an issue to analyze on.

To me hijab is different from vain/niqab… Hijab cover only head and niqab cover all part of woman body. they should allow uses of hijab but for vain or niqab bcos of security of life now in Nigeria they should find something to do about it….may God Allah help us

Nigerians should not single out a religious group
for stereotyping. We didn’t ban the tricycle, army
uniform, police uniform because they are also
used by the terrorist. Neither did we close down
    schools because terrorists said western
education is prohibited nor did we close down
Federal Government schools because the Chibok
were kidnapped from there! Hijab is the Muslim
women’s right just as education is the right of
every citizen of this country. You do not cut off
your head because it is aching you, you seek for
solution. Gather intelligence, use bomb detectors,
install CCTV, flush the terrorists out of their
hideout. May God be the strength of our Soldiers
    and guide PMB administration

Your comment..I dont think it is possible for anyone to deprive any citizen of his constitutional fundamental right, however,if there is anyone to take such a step he or she shd b called back to sense. Moreover depriving Muslims of there religion ordinance is like inviting Allah’s wrath and his punishment, so Mr president shd reverse his comment and his destructive opinion. I SAY NO TO BAN OF HIJAB.

Considering the ban of hijab as a solution to the insurgency is pointless because beheading is not the solution to headache. Besides its like an attempt to create a fresh problem in the country.

Your comment..All praise belong to Allah for given a clew to the mission of the Boko Haram the so called Islamic terrorist. Banning Hijab would only symbolise a mission accomplished. This issue will only catalyse unrest situation in the country and more blood sheds.Burning Churches and Mosques were their strategies on the on set because they know Nigerian are sensitive in area of religion. I pray mr President don’t fall into their trap. His administration will suffer for it the most.

FG’s proposed plan to place a temporal ban on hijab wearing because of security reasons to me is not bad in order to save lives of innocent citizen if this country especially people residing in north eastern part of the country.the president himself is a muslim and he knows very well that hijab is a religious dress of muslim women, and if not for cogent reason, he would not want to tamper with any religious belief of anyone.Nigerians should always think right and give human safety a priority than religious customs,it is when we are alive that we think of serving God.let us support our president to succeed in the fight against both insurgence and corruption.Lets no sentiment be allowed when it comes to government steps to solve the problem facing the country. And when the issue of boko haram is totally solved muslim women can go back to the wearing of their hijabs.

    suspend hijab.
How is banning hijab for security concern a slight on Islam?
I had earlier said that bigotry is Nigeria’s problem.
Being alive does not border Nigerians.
Their religion borders them more than their own lives.
Ban hijab since those poor glopes use it to hide bomb.
    Afterwards it can be unbanned.
Those frustrated poor kids who think they are fighting for God must be stopped.
