Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, says the government will pay N220 million to the families of 11 police officers killed during recent attacks on security operatives in the state.
Recently, security operatives have come under attack in the state.
In April, some gunmen attacked checkpoints along the Port Harcourt-Owerri road, Ikwerre LGA of the state and killed some security agents, including police officers and operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The latest attack occurred on Friday, when two police stations and a checkpoint were attacked by gunmen, and seven persons — six police officers and the wife of a policeman — were killed.
Speaking on Monday during a condolence visit to Friday Eboka, the state commissioner of police, the governor said N20 million will be paid to each family of the deceased officers.
Wike noted that although no amount of money can equate to human life, the state’s gesture is aimed at supporting the bereaved families.
“In the past two to three weeks, we have lost 11 police officers. This is a dark period for us in the state,” Wike said.
“We must be united to fight for this country to be one. We must not allow anyone to talk about secession. If you want to secede, Rivers state is not part of it, and nobody can cow Rivers state to be part of it. Not under my watch will I allow that.”
The governor also urged the police personnel to be more careful and vigilant.
