‎Bukola Saraki, senate president, on Friday, urged the ad-hoc committee on power to ensure restoration of power supply to places experiencing blackouts.

Saraki gave the charge while inaugurating the‎ committee, which is saddled with probing the power sector.

The committee was set up on August 13, upon revelations that despite the huge expenditure on the sector, electricity supply has been far from becoming stable.

The committee will specifically investigate the process of privatisation of the power sector since 1999.
‎‎
“Today, I had the privilege to inaugurate the senate ad-hoc committee on power. The mandate of this committee is to utilise all the legislative tools at its disposal to ensure that the power sector begins to function to capacity, and ensure that light is soon seen in the places that have been experiencing shoddy power supply,” Saraki said on his Facebook page.‎

“I also reminded the members of the committee that Nigerians want to see a senate that rolls up its sleeves to fix Nigeria. With the calibre of people in the committee, I am confident that they are up to the task set out before them.”‎
‎‎
According to the official Twitter handle of the senate, Abubakar Kyari, chairman of the committee, in his remarks, said that the committee would see its role as that of a satellite positioned to ensure increased power generation‎

He said the committee would work to investigate leakages in the system and the money pumped into power since privatisation. He added that the committee was on a fact-finding mission to make the power sector effective for Nigerians, not a witch-hunt.‎

Members of the committee include ‎Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Olusola Adeyeye (Osun) and Dino Melaye (Kogi).
