The Kano government says it recovered seven children who were abducted from the state and sold off in different parts of the country.

Speaking to BBC Hausa Service, on Monday, Muhammad Garba (pictured), commissioner for information, said the committee set up by the state found the children when they visited some orphanages in Anambra and Enugu states.

He said five parents have identified their children who will be reunited with them soon after scrutiny.

Some parents were reported to have claimed that about 113 children are still missing.

“Photos and videos of these children have been leaked and five parents say they have identified their children among those seen in the video,” Garba said.

In 2019, the state police command rescued nine children who were reportedly kidnapped in Kano and sold off in Onitsha, Anambra state. The children were said to have been forcefully converted to Christianity.

The anti-kidnapping team of Operation Puff Adder in Onitsha later rescued another child, one 11-year-old Muhammed Ya’u, who was kidnapped from Kano.

The police arrested some suspects in connection with the kidnap of the children.

Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano governor, had said the kidnappers would face the death penalty.
