A tanker conveying gas, on Saturday, leaked its content around Barracks bus stop in the Surulere area of Lagos state.

Margaret Adeseye, director of Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, said the incident occurred at about 9:04am.

Adeseye said the tanker developed a fault within the top inlet of its compartment while on motion.

She added that traffic has been diverted in the area to prevent any form of disaster while emergency responders try to put the situation under control.

“While the Agency was alerted at 09:04hours Saturday, the Ilupeju Fire Station with their quick response ameliorate the situation with a chemical foam compound to forestall ignition and any eventuality of a secondary emergency,” she said.

“This incident had led to the diversion of traffic as other emergency responders have teamed up with the State Fire and Rescue to avert disaster as traffic were diverted from the Barracks end and Stadium section of Western Avenue.”

Adeseye added that no casualty was recorded and that more updates would be shared with the public.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also confirmed the incident, saying the tanker driver hit the newly erected barrier at the stadium bridge.

LASTMA, in a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, its director of public affairs, said the tanker spilled its content while trying to force its way under the newly erected barrier.

The agency added that the driver has been handed over to the police for questioning.
