Twenty-five girls and women have been rescued from a camp of Boko Haram in Sambisa forest, the defence headquarters said on Wednesday.

Many insurgents were said to be killed during a gun battle with security forces, while one soldier was killed and five others sustained injuries.

The latest rescue effort means a little over 700 children and women (some pictured) have now been rescued from the area in two weeks.

Most of the freed captives have been taken to an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Yola, capital of Adamawa state.

Babatunde Osotimehin, a professor and executive director of the United Nations Population Fund,  recently disclosed that about 214 of the girls and women were “at various stages of pregnancy” when they were handed over to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
