Troops of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have reportedly killed five fighters of the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) in Borno.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, said the operation was conducted in collaboration with troops of Operation Hadin Kai.

The publication said the troops commenced operations on the terrorist enclaves on December 4.

An intelligence source was quoted as saying the troops destroyed four terrorist camps in Ngurnoa, Gumnari, Naira, and Amburam villages in Monguno LGA.

The source said troops engaged the terrorists in a gun duel and forced the insurgents to escape from the location.

The source disclosed that in an attempt to escape the fire power of the troops, the terrorists ran into a canal, adding that five of them were neutralised in the process.

One of the officers sustained injuries during the encounter and was evacuated by air to 7 DMSH in Maiduguri, the Borno capital, for medical treatment.

The troops recovered 1 x GPMG and 4 x AK 47 magazines in a shallow portion of the water body.

In October, over 100 suspected ISWAP members were reportedly killed by military air strikes when they gathered for a meeting at a forest in Bukar Mairam in Marte LGA of Borno.

On November 10, the troops also killed nine ISWAP fighters and rescued about 85 kidnapped victims from the terrorists’ hideouts in Borno villages.
