The Cross River state police say three armed robbery suspects escaped from its custody at the command headquarters in Calabar, the state capital, on Sunday.

Irene Ugbo, the state command spokesperson, who confirmed the incident to TheCable, said one of the suspects has been rearrested.

She added that two other suspects were killed during efforts to rearrest them.

The suspects were said to have used a hacksaw to cut open the lock of the cell where they were detained before escaping.

Ugbo further said there is no truth to the reports that 19 suspects escaped.

“The incident happened yesterday. Actually, three suspects escaped and not 19 as allegedly circulated. Unfortunately, they also met their waterloo. Two of them were gunned down and one was rearrested,” Ugbo said.

“Three actually escaped but later, we caught up with them, and in the process, two were gunned down.”
