The United States government says it is troubled by the response of the Nigeria police to Monday’s procession by members of the Shi’a Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN).

According to a statement from the US embassy, the country said it was deeply concerned by reports of the number of deaths that resulted from the police clash with members of the IMN also know as Shi’ites.

“This is the latest in a series of violent incidents between security forces and members of the Shia Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), some of which have resulted in deaths, destruction of property, and the arbitrary detention of IMN members,” the statement read.

“The United States calls for calm and restraint on all sides, a reduction of tensions, and greater communication between Shia citizens and government authorities.”

The US government spoke about the rights of the Shi’ites to assemble, peacefully express the religious beliefs and mark their celebrations.

It called on the Nigerian government to defend the rights of Shi’ites and added that Shi’ites also need to respect the laws of the land as cooperate with police.

The US government said the Nigerian government should transparently investigate the latest clash and deaths that occurred and ensure justice is served.

On Monday, Shi’ites embarked on their annual Arbaeen trek from Kano to Zaria when a clash ensued between the trekking team and the police.

Several members of the sect, including an eight month old baby, were killed in the clash.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria came to prominence when its members clashed with the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna state, in December 2015.

Monday’s attack was the latest in a series of clash between Shi’ites and security officials.

In August, a Nigerian commission of inquiry found the army guilty of gunning down 348 Shi’ites in an attack.
