The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has promised to put an end to SIM swap fraud in light of fraudulent activities carried on customers’ bank accounts.

The commission says it has put in place a regulation that is all-encompassing, to the benefit of network subscribers across the country.

Speaking in an interview with NAN on Friday, Helen Obi, head of zonal operations, NCC, said SIM swap fraud was replete with underlying issues that needed prompt resolution.

“We have cases of fraudulent activities done on people’s bank account as a result of SIM swap and they complain to the commission expecting that the commission would compensate them,” she said.

“We have now put a regulation in place advising these operators to demand certain requirements and criteria before allowing SIM swapped.”

Obi encouraged network subscribers to cooperate with both the network operators and the NCC, saying the requirements for SIM swap was well within their reach.

“So it is all in the interest of consumers that we are doing this because of the complaints, especially the one that has to do with fraudulent activities on the consumer’s bank account,” she said.

“What we as a regulatory authority keep advising and encouraging our consumers to do is that they should also help the commission to serve them better by following laid down rules.”
