A woman, identified as Maryam Aminu, has set herself on fire over alleged cheating by her boyfriend in Dutse LGA of Jigawa.

Adamu Shehu, spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the state, said the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Shehu said the 35-year-old woman resides in the Gindin Dinya area of Dutse LGA.

He said it was discovered during the investigation that the lady used petrol to set herself on fire.

He said some people in the neighbourhood put out the fire and rescued her, adding that she sustained severe burns.

The NSCDC spokesperson said the lady is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Dutse.

“Although the cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, it was alleged to be connected to a relationship with her 40-year-old boyfriend, identified as Ibrahim Haruna,” NAN quoted Shehu as saying.

“The lady suffered second-degree burns, she is currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital, Dutse.”

While commenting on the incident, Muhammad Yusif, a resident of the area,  said the lady got angry and attempted suicide after she discovered her boyfriend had gone to see another woman.

“She is a jealous commercial sex worker living in the neighbourhood,” Yusif said.

“The lady suspected that her boyfriend went to see another woman and attempted to commit suicide.”
