Newspaper Headlines: 31 states owe CBN N340bn bailout funds

The murder of six police officers in Delta state dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that 31 state governments owe the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) a total of N339.9bn obtained to pay workers’ salaries between 2015 and 2023. The newspaper reports that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said it will place the banner containing the names and pictures of the persons recently declared wanted in strategic locations across the country.

The Nation says there is pressure on bureau de change (BDC) operators to offload excess dollars and other foreign currencies due to the policies initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The newspaper reports that Julius Abure, national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), is under intense pressure as the Lagos chapter of the party has called for his resignation.

Daily Trust reports that Nigerians are demanding life-changing projects from states amid increased revenue from federation account allocation committee (FAAC). The newspaper says troops of the Nigerian army have rescued 78 victims during an operation in terrorists’ enclaves in Borno state.

The Guardian’s cover page is an editorial on why the parliamentary system of government is not desirable for Nigeria. The newspaper says Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu, said his state will generate and distribute electricity by the end of 2026.
