Muhammadu Sanusi II, the former Emir of Kano and leader of the Tijjaniyya adherents in Nigeria, has advised Nigerians to desist from “cursing or abusing” their leaders.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor called on Nigerians to be patient and prayerful over the nation’s socio-economic and security challenges.

He made the appeal on Tuesday in Sokoto during an interaction with Tijjaniyya adherents from seven north-west states.

“In my own knowledge about economy, I know that we must suffer to get things right,” he said.

“What is expected of us now is patient, fervent prayers and we must stand up to get things better in our own way through legitimate ways.

“We must desist from abusing or cursing our leaders because the Holy Prophet discouraged that.

“We shall not involve ourselves in corrupt practices and other atrocities because our religion preaches against it.

“We must change for the better and remain committed to peace and development of our societies.”

Sanusi called on members of the sect, which he said are more than 50 million in Nigeria, to be more active in nation-building and hold politicians to account.

“When you are approached during elections, you need to ask for recognition in terms of school construction, health facility and other services,” he added.
