Lecturers of the University of Jos in Plateau state have begun an indefinite strike to press home their demands for improved working conditions.
F. C. Piwuna, chairman of the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.
Piwuna said ASUU’s national executive council had approved the action.
“The NEC of ASUU has approved our request for total, indefinte and comprehensive strike starting immediately,” the statement read .
“It means that all activities — teaching, supervision, examination as well as statutory and ad hoc committee meetings — have been suspended.”
Though Piwuna did not give further details on the reasons for the strike, NAN learnt that alleged discrepancies in the payments of entitlements was among the grievances of the lecturers.
The lecturers are also demanding that certain allowances being enjoyed by their colleagues in other institutions be paid to them.
